Work

I help organisations grow through better design, clearer strategy, and healthier teams.

andy-speaking-3

I’ve spent the last decade leading design and product work across startups, scaleups, and global organisations. Here’s a short look at the roles I’ve held, what I focused on, and what changed as a result.

I’m open to full time or fractional leadership, consulting, advisory work, mentoring, speaking, and the occasional writing project. If you’re building something and want some help, I’m always happy to talk.

Earlier work

2004—2015

Award winning designer

Before the leadership roles above, I spent several years working across the public, private, and third sectors. I delivered award-winning digital work at Storm ID, worked across national publishing at What’s On, and freelanced for a range of clients. During those years I designed for organisations such as Red Bull, Scottish Government, The Leith Agency, Standard Life, and DC Thomson. These early roles shaped how I think about design, teams, and long‑term product quality.

How I work

I try to bring clarity and alignment to complex work.

I build design organisations that scale without chaos.

I work through insight, whether it’s research, data, or the texture of day-to-day practice.

I partner closely with product, engineering, and data.

I aim to give teams the trust and conditions they need to do their best work.

I keep things human, simple, and honest.

For startups and scaleups

Alongside other roles, I mentor and advise founders on user experience and design, product strategy, and organisational shape. Most of this work is through programs like Techscaler, CoSTAR Network, Barclays Eagle Labs, or direct referrals.

Fractional leadership

One to four days a week. Senior design or product leadership embedded in your team. Useful when you need experience, clarity, and momentum without hiring a full‑time executive.

Full‑time contracts

Short‑term or medium‑term contracts when you need hands‑on leadership or delivery. This doesn’t need to carry a Head of Design title. It can be design, product, strategy, or a mix.

Strategy sprints

Two to eight weeks. Deep focus on design, product, or company strategy. Clear recommendations, early shifts in how teams work, and a simple plan for what happens next.

Startup advisory

Monthly or quarterly sessions. Product direction, team development, hiring support, and a sounding board for senior leaders. Lightweight and flexible.

Advisory board roles

Formal, longer-term engagement for companies that want user experience and product thinking represented at leadership level. Helps shape direction, culture, and decision-making over time.

1‑1 mentoring

For designers, UX practitioners, product managers, founders, and emerging leaders. Focused on practical growth, clearer thinking, and navigating the realities of senior work.

If you’re not sure what you need, we can start small and figure it out together.
